Ahoy Matey!

I was thinking about designing a Pirate Party, finding lots of inspiration on Pinterest etc when I was approached by Costume Discounters to review a costume.  I immediately jumped on the idea of checking out a childs pirate costume.  I just love it when the birthday kid dresses up for the party.

Here is a picture of my son in the costume - he couldn't wait to play 'pirate'!! Argggg!   All he needs now is a sword and an eye patch!  I might have to head to the craft store and make an eye patch with some black felt.

He wasn't so sure about the hat, it has long hair attached and he kept telling me that only girls have long hair.  HA HA

The costume is great; the shirt and vest are attached so its just pants, top, belt and hat.  I know this will lend to lots of imagination play.  Costumes aren't just for Halloween!  I think I need to order the pirate princess costume for my little girl.

I also like to encourage guests to help play up the theme by wearing a certain color, costume or offering accessories.  For my sons Elmo Party I encouraged everyone to wear red!

If you are crafty you can make eye patches or you can purchase eye patches and swords from Oriental Trading- hand them out to all guests when they arrive.

Use this great backdrop from Oriental Trading behind your food table.  Add sails and the birthday banner to the top of the table and the table becomes a pirate ship.

How about this Pirate ship cake?

You know you need to keep the kids entertained, here are some outdoor activities:
Have a treasure hunt - fill your sand box with beads, jewels and other fun treasures.

Walk the plank - put a 2x4 piece of wood over some blocks and have the kids walk across barefoot - maybe put a mini pool underneath in case they go overboard.

In addition to the eye patches and swords you must hand out gold coins (chocolate of course) as a parting favor.  A pirate can never have too much treasure!

Diet Bet-final week

Well as you know I have been Dieting with some local Philly bloggers.  We took the DietBet to loose 4% of our body weight in 4 weeks.  All of us have the opportunity to win and everyone is doing awesome!!  Dietbet's website is very user friendly, we can encourage each other, touch base, weigh in, share secrets etc.  Knowing you have a weigh in at the end and that your friends are supporting you really helps to hold you accountable.

10 days to go and my body is in a plateau - I was really watching what I ate, snacking on only fruits and veggies and even seeing a trainer once a week.  Then my husband and I went to Jamaica for 5 days.  I tried to eat ok but the lack of exercise and the Pina Coladas were my downfall.

The other ladies in the Bet are doing awesome - please check them out.

The Bet - Week 2

Week 2 of playing the game.  (Recap here.)  I realize that one of the hardest times to stay on track in eating healthy is when you go to a dinner party or attending a Birthday party!  Especially since now the dessert table is the main focal point of those parties and pizza is what is usually served.

Here are some tips on watching what you eat at the party.  I know you already KNOW these things but its a nice reminder.

#1 Don't show up to the party hungry!
#2 Definitely check out the fruit skewers and go ahead dip those carrots!
#3 Hold a water bottle so you aren't tempted to keep munching.
#4 Stand away from the food area.
#5 Only eat half of the cupcake.

A Diet is not about depriving yourself, you won't stay on track that way.  Just limit your proportions.

I also wanted to give shout outs to the other awesome women playing this game with me- we are all going to be big losers together!!!  Dietbet is a great way to loose weight especially if you do it with friends!!

Valentine's Day Party

Another successful Valentine's Day Party!  My girlfriend Carrie and I threw a Sweet Party for 20 kids under 4 years old and their parents yesterday.  This was one of my first Purpose Party!  We asked guests to bring warm new or gently used clothing, toys or craft supplies to donate to Cradles to Crayons Philadelphia.  This was VERY successful - Thank you everyone for being so generous!

Sweet Treats Table consisted of heart shaped muffins, red velvet whoopie pies, strawberry jello, grapes, neapolitan cupcakes, Twizzlers, M&M's, Kisses, Conversation hearts, heart shaped cheese, marshmallows and powdered donuts.

We had pink and red gable boxes ready for the kids to decorate with stickers.  After their craft time we lined up the 'mail boxes' and the kids (or parents) handed out the Valentines!

Lunch time we served a kids favorite - Pizza but with heart pepperoni!

"Cradles to Crayons has a mission of providing to children ages 0 to 12 some of the most important basics of life—free of charge.  These basics include clothing, school supplies, toys, and much more. In other words, we provide all the physical goods that children need to be safe, protected from the elements, and ready to learn. And by supplying them with high-quality used or new goods, we make children feel valued."
Please check out Cradles to Crayons  to see if you can incorporate them into your next event!

Happy Valentine's Day!

The Bet

One of my New Year's Resolutions was to make sure I eat produce at every meal.  This should not be hard since I do that for my kids but sometimes I just get lazy.

I have been pretty good- I cut out a snack before bed and I try to exercise more but needed a little kick in the bum!  A few blogging moms in the Philly area have taken a challenge to loose 4% of our body weight in 28 days.  The game is called DietBet: social dieting- because your friends are the best motivators.  We each placed a bet of $25, then last night we went down to Tony Lukes in S. Philly for a weigh in.  Tony Jr. was great about inspiring us and telling us his tricks; since he has lost over 130 lbs in the last year.  Whoever loses the weight WINS!

This is Week One and my main goal is to make a lifestyle change.  I have 2 children and an awesome husband so I am not interested in making a different meal for myself or depriving myself, just want to do it all better.

And to get me motivated - how about this awesome quote from Tony Luke himself:
"You will never keep the weight off if you don't make it a lifestyle change and if you don't make exercising as important a part of your life as getting up and showering in the morning."

So follow me on this adventure to get a little healthier, feel better about my mommy body and get in shape for the summer!  For more information on how this works go check out DietBet or check them out on Facebook or Twitter @dietbet.  I encourage words of support and trash talking from my competitors!

Disclosure: I am not being compensated for this or any dietbet post.  I do hope we all win this bet and get to spilt the pot.
